Why Self-Host Your VPN?
NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and other commercial VPN providers promise privacy but route all your traffic through their servers — you are simply shifting trust from your ISP to the VPN company. Multiple commercial VPNs have been caught logging user activity despite “no-logs” marketing claims. Self-hosted VPNs eliminate this trust problem entirely: you control the server, the configuration, and the logs (or lack thereof).
Headscale is a self-hosted implementation of the Tailscale coordination server, giving you a WireGuard-based mesh VPN where devices connect directly to each other without routing through a central relay. WG-Easy wraps WireGuard in a simple web interface for traditional client-server VPN setups — ideal for remote access to your home network. NetBird provides zero-configuration mesh networking with automatic NAT traversal, similar to Tailscale but fully self-hosted. OpenVPN remains widely deployed for its flexibility and broad client support across every operating system and device.
Firezone provides a WireGuard-based VPN with a web admin interface, SSO integration, and granular access policies — useful for organizations that need to control which users can access which internal resources. Pangolin creates encrypted tunnels for exposing self-hosted services to the internet without opening firewall ports. Defguard combines VPN management with identity provider features. Amnezia focuses on censorship circumvention, disguising VPN traffic to bypass deep packet inspection in restrictive networks. WGDashboard provides a management UI for existing WireGuard installations. ZTNet offers a ZeroTier-compatible network controller. For full-mesh enterprise VPN with identity awareness, Teleport and Octelium provide zero-trust network access where every connection is authenticated and authorized regardless of network location.
